Easy Holiday Nail Art 2013

Nail art is a fun and creative way to express yourself. The holidays provide for a perfect opportunity to add a little extra cheer to your nails. If you are no nail art expert, here are some super easy ways to add that holiday spirit to your nails without the frustration and years of know-how. Reds and Whites are so characteristic of the holidays, so we also included some examples of great polishes to use for your artistic needs or to wear by themselves. Don’t forget to hashtag #wrkitgirl to have your nail art featured on our instagram!

How to Wear Dark Red Lipstick

Fall Beauty Trend 2013: Burgundy Lips

We love a bold lip here at and that makes us über excited that the bold, matte Burgundy lip is in this fall. In our cover photo we have featured a Lancôme Absolu Crème De Mat and Armani Beauty Rouge D’Armani Downtown Collection that are deep wine/burgundy colors both under $35.

It could possibly be a bit much for some people who are not used to that pop of color in the middle of their face. We have 2 different ways to wear this look:

Bold: Be sure to use a lip liner before you apply your dark red lip. A great one is Dark Raspberry by Make Up Forever because it is long wearing and waterproof. In addition to lining your lips, go ahead and fill in to the center of your lips. This will prevent the color from bleeding and also help keep your lipstick on longer. Finally, go ahead and apply that bold color in a couple coats and you’re ready to go!

Toned Down: Try using a lip stain that’s a dark berry color instead of a very pigmented lipstick. You can also try putting on the lipstick, then blotting some of the color off by pressing your lips firmly together on a tissue.

Check out some of our favorite celebrities wearing the trend!

Topshop x Houston

A couple weeks ago Wrk IT Girl attended the Topshop Loves Houston event in Nordstrom at Houston Galleria. We shopped and mingled with other Topshop and fashion lovers. Dallas fashion blogger Merritt Beck of The Style Scribe hosted the event and she was so sweet. Merritt shared with us some of her favorite Topshop pieces, including the motorcycle jacket that she threw over her shoulders. We received swag bags with custom Topshop Loves Houston labels, enjoyed awesome beats from a local DJ, and makeup touchups with Topshop Beauty products. We can’t wait for Topshop Beauty to be available in-store one day. In the meantime head over the their website to view the selection of products!

Pool Tradeshow at Magic Market Week 2013

At the Pool Tradeshow for Magic Market Week 2013, there were so many cool booths of designers and brands like Tatty Devine213 ApparelButter London, and Sprout Watches. We loved the manicures done at the Butter London booth and their cuticle oil smells delicious. They found local nail artists to come in and hook us up! Our Editor got a bright yellow look in honor of the festivities of Market Week. 213 apparel were making custom t-shirts throughout the day and we were excited to even get a chance for input on future t-shirt styles. We hope one of the ones we selected will make the cut! Tatty Devine had funky and unique accessories. We particularly fell in love with the Tiger necklace because our theme song for the trip was “Roar” by Katy Perry. How appropriate.

Our Editor-in-Chief participated in a “Design a Watch” contest at the Sprout booth. The winning design will be produced and sold next season so we can’t wait to see who won! We made a makeup inspired design with little lipsticks, compacts, and lips all over the watch with all kinds of colors. When you were done, they were so generous as to give us a Sprout watch of our own. Sprout watches are eco-friendly and are NOT PLASTIC! This info made us instant fans of Sprout!

Kind of Blue

Kind of Blue

As I sat listening to one of my all time favorite songs “Blue in Green” by Miles Davis from his Kind of Blue album, I was motivated to paint my nails a blue color. The song is more of a melancholy yet angelic song. The color I chose is more bright and sunshine-like, not a mellow color. But I still enjoy it all the same. You can also see my attempt at nail art on my pinky finger. I quickly realized that was a no-go and gave up. I’ll get better at it sooner or later. I love using color to express my mood or to portray how a song has made me feel. I love the way music can get me in a certain mood or inspire me to do something. Anything. What inspires you?

Springtime Nails

I am loving my latest mani! I did it myself and I’m so proud. My biggest beauty splurges that I have had is my nail care. I used to wear acrylic nails and was never late for my refills every two weeks. I also went in for a polish change every week. I started to go over board and got designs and crystals, etc. I finally made myself a budget and realized I was spending way too much on manis & pedis.
I was motivated to make a change because I have been wanting to invest in other beauty products (i.e. Clarisonic, Naked 1 & 2 palettes, PMD-personal microdermabrasion device, and other makeup). I saw that my savings were doing some good so now I’m focused on getting rid of debt before I invest in those products. I’m so close I can taste it!
Anywho, I’ve had a difficult time learning to do my own nails but it’s been a very rewarding experience. I learned how unsanitary nail salons are (the most sanitary I’ve been to and will ever go back to is Princess Nails in California. They also have a location in New York) and I have learned what’s best for my routine. I’ll share with you in another post my favorite nail products but I wanted to show my latest Mani!

What I’m Wearing:

  • Essie “to buy or not to buy”
  • Essie “a crewed interest”
  • Kicks Nail Polish corrector used to clean edges
