One of my only new year’s resolutions was to take more risks with fashion. Don’t play it so safe. I’ve always been good about adding a piece of flare here and there with either a pop of color or a bold statement piece. This year I would like to make myself uncomfortable and take more fashion risks! I used to be very daring and was so comfortable with my personal style, but as time has gone by, I noticed that I am around so many “serious” people. I would like to spice it up and get the “old me” back when it comes to funky fashion. So today I promise myself and the WrkItGirl.com team and you all who are reading, that this year will be a lot of new fashion choices and combinations. I cannot wait to go on this journey with you. I must admit, I’m a little nervous, but I hope that you will help me along the way and let me know if you did or didn’t like the outfit choice and why.I hope you all are having a great start to your new year! xoxo, Wrk It Girl

If you’re following wrkitgirl on Instagram (@wrkitgirl), you will know that we had a huge announcement to share! So the big news is….drum roll please! Wrk It Girl is MOVING TO NEW YORK CITY!!! I am so grateful to finally be able to share this news with you all! I have been holding it in for about a month now. I wanted to make sure that everything was solid before I revealed this huge change in my life. I’m not going to lie, I am actually pretty scared and anxious. I recently shared some advice on ‘Facing Change‘ and the inspiration came from what I was going through at the time and deciding to finally pursue my dreams in New York. I’ve wanted to live in New York for as long as I can remember and the fact that this is actually happening feels so surreal. So many people from all over the world dream of going to New York and I just feel so blessed that we (me and you) will be able to take this journey together! I hope that you come along with me on this journey. I’ve gotten this far with you, and I hope that you stay with me along the way. With our prayers and steady determination we will be successful together. Let’s do this! Wrk It Girl!
I know a young woman who is trying to make it in the entertainment industry. She wants to be an actress or tv host really badly. I’m always giving her words of advice and I try to encourage her as much as I can. I noticed that all of the photo shoots she does or the pictures she takes, she is pretty much half naked. Was this her idea of success? Was this her plan to “make it big?”. I have noticed that so many young women think that you have to show it all to be perceived as sexy or desirable or advance in life. When I was growing up, I was not allowed to wear anything revealing. I had to have my shoulders covered at all times and my shorts had to be knee length or longer. I used to hate it! I would be so mad because all the other girls in my class got to wear the “cute” clothes which consisted of short shorts, really tight shirts to emphasize the chest and loads of makeup. I thought they were so popular and I envied them because they got to shave their legs and wear makeup and have boyfriends. (Yes it’s true, I wasn’t allowed to shave my legs until I was 16 and I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup until I was out of the house at 18.) Imagine how life was for a girl going to high school with super hairy legs, wore glasses, wasn’t allowed to pluck her eyebrows and couldn’t even wear mascara. Talk about nerd alert!! With all of this being said, I wouldn’t have wanted my life to have gone any other way. I understand now what my parents were trying to do. They wanted to instill in us that we are not what we look like. We have true value to ourselves as young ladies and we should act and present ourselves as such. My parents had a major emphasis on education and succeeding intellectually; not by your body or the things you have. We grew up in a modest household, so we weren’t going to “make it” any other way than some serious hard work and education.
However, on the flip side, I do think that women should be able to express their sexuality and embrace who they are. I feel that embracing your sexuality or sassy side is so empowering and freeing. That’s what has inspired me to share this with you all. I have learned the balance of adding a little sass, but always having class. I feel the most sexy or sassy when I add an element of sexy, and not bare it all for the world to see. I love a sexy shoe (like these zip-front booties I’m wearing), or a cute crop top or a bold red lip. These subtle things always have me feeling amazing! What is your idea of sexy or sassy? I would love to hear your thoughts!
I am currently bundled up inside on this super muggy and dark day. It’s getting pretty chilly here in Texas and I’m getting excited! I wanted to share an outfit that I wore on a day that wasn’t cold but cool enough to wear these awesome knee high boots. This outfit is perfect for a brunch outings or date night. I love that you can take this from day to night. The floral on this dress screams “happy” while the black boots say “come hither”. When I choosing what to wear I thought that this outfit might not make sense, but once I put it on, I thought “oh yea baby!”. My hesitation was wearing something short with the high boots. I used to not like it when I saw women wearing knee high boots and daisy dukes with a tank top. Actually, I still don’t like it. It’s just not logical. How are you hot up top, but cold down below? Are you walking around with a snow storm following your legs during the summer time? Anyway, I do think that it makes sense to wear a dress with boots if it’s cool enough outside. What are your fashion pet peeves?
I love this outfit I wore to the Blogger Meet and Greet I hosted with my girls Nicole, Shasie, Taylor, LeRenda and Heather. A few of my girlfriends/blogger buddies get together for brunch every so often and one time Shasie said “hey why don’t we do a big meet & greet for all of the Houston area fashion/beauty bloggers?!”…and so it was. We began planning and putting together the event about a month ahead of time. When Shasie puts her mind to something, it will happen. That type of tenacity is so inspiring. These women have definitely played a part in my growth as a blogger. I’m so happy they are my friends! I want to thank the Houston Fashion & Beauty community for coming out to not only support, but also get to know one another. We had people from as far as New York City attend!!! We were blown away by the turnout. We love you Houston, TX!

Inspiration has found it’s place in many things for me. It’s found in street signs, packaging, Charlie (my dog), purses, nature, you name it. Simply walking across the street can send my brain somewhere creative or think on a deeper level. Walking across the street reminds me walking a path from one time of your life to experience another because of change. Going through several changes or a single major change can be very scary and intimidating. Even if you’ve always dreamed of something huge to happen or you have wished for it all of your life, nonetheless when it arrives, it is the scariest feeling to know that some things are unknown. How do you know if this risk will really be worth it? What if it turns out to be the biggest mistake of your life? How do you know if you will be a better person because of it?
Well…you don’t know. You have to just keep moving and walk (or run) head-on with that dream that you have so desperately prayed for, asked for, and pursued. Spearhead into your life keeping your core morals in your toolbox and never forgetting where you came from. Make it a mission to strive to be a stronger and smarter person than you were the day before, the week before or the year before. That is all that you can control. Everything else is out of your hands. Train yourself to focus on the positive attitude that you will have when things happen, be them good or bad.

This Texas weather, boy I tell you. It takes a while to make up it’s mind. Cold one day, and hot the next. It’s dark, rainy and storming and the next hour it’s bright and the sun is shining. I used to hate the bi-polar weather here, but I kind of like it now. I enjoy and welcome all of the weather conditions. Even when I had plans to go outside and enjoy the day, if it starts raining I still find a peace and joy in it. Part of my own transition is trying to appreciate life and all this it provides and one being the beautiful nature we sometimes take for granted.
In light of the weather transition, it was appropriate to pair this turtle neck with a simple white pencil skirt and of course my signature pop of color, the red heels. I brought it all together with a pair of stud earrings and sunglasses. This is an easy way to go glam without even trying.

That is one loud blazer! Yes, I know this. This piece is usually worn out and about when I want to make a statement with not so much effort. Throw on some simple jewelry and voila! Ready to go. This is a classic blazer, in a bright color that can easily go from office chic to downtown happy hour. This was recently worn to the office and it was a huge hit! It definitely motivated me to take more “color” risk when handling business.
