I went to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo last week and I saw Mary J. Blige. I’m not usually a cowboy boot wearing gal, but for this occasion I felt obligated to delve myself into the “Texas” culture. It was a great experience as I had never been to the actual livestock show before. For those of you who don’t know what the livestock show is, it’s an exhibit where livestock (cattle) are judged on specific traits of their particular breed. The Rodeo, which is my favorite part, is a competition where cowboys show their skills at bull riding, roping calfs, and wrestling steers(A steer is a castrated bull. They are said to be calmer.).
The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo always has a carriage race which is always exciting and crowd interactive. There is also a calf scramble where young teens rope a calf to gain a scholarship. It’s actually really funny to watch because the calfs run away and all the teens are trying to catch them. When they do finally rope them, the calfs won’t move. They literally stand there like a statue as the teens try and get them to move. Then at the end of it all there is a concert to follow all the fun. The night I went was Black Heritage night, so the performing artist was Mary J. Blige. She was amazing and so soulful as always.
I wanted to share this with those of you around the world who have never been and get an inside look at what really goes on!
Hello there! I wanted to continue the 28 day challenge with my 10th outfit. I wore a really cute white top that I got in Stockholm, Sweden a few months ago from Vero Moda. I wore some simple skinny jeans and my favorite (and only pair) of Ariat cowgirl boots. I went to the Houston Rodeo and saw the talented Mary J. Blige perform. She is always so passionate when she performs. She sang a little old school and new school…I enjoyed it all the same.
Wrk IT Girl will be 1 year old in a couple days and I am so excited to celebrate with you all and I’m so happy that you’ve been through this journey with me! I truly love and appreciate y’all!
Hello friends! I wanted to share some of my favorite products that I’ve used and came across this month. From Black Soap to flavored water! Click the video below to see what products made the cut this month!
xoxo, Wrk IT Girl!
I wanted to bring Dr. Mae Carol Jemison to the Black History Month party of amazing women. Mae is a brilliant woman who is a physician and NASA Astronaut. She is the first black woman to travel in space on Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. She is such a gorgeous being. I recreated her astronaut look with a orange blazer, galaxy skirt, a simple black top and a bright blue shoe. I added the Moschino belt to break up the top and skirt. Pink nails are a staple of mine so adding the glitter is totally appropriate for the NASA and space theme!
How will you recreate this look?

Today I wanted to celebrate another day in Black History Month by shining light on Madame CJ Walker. I actually did a project on her in the 10th grade. Her story is so inspiring. She started by selling her homemade beauty products door to door to help supplement her household income for her and her child after her husband passed. She didn’t know it would turn into the hair phenomenon that it did.
In her picture she is wearing a white ruffle top and simple jewelry. I recreated her look with a LuLu Frost twist! I absolutely LOVE LuLu Frost jewelry so I had to include it in this set. I also added some funky flare with polka dot denim and white wedge sneakers. I included some bronzer to keep the makeup simple.
Today I wanted to focus on one of my favorite Jazz Singers of all time…Ella Fitzgerald. She is known as the “Queen of Song”. During her time as an artist she transcended all the race and ethnicity issues and was known for her amazing talent.
Here I recreated her look but I added my Wrk IT Girl twist. I loved this blue silk dress because it’s simple enough but the way it’s designed makes it pop on it’s own. Ella is wearing a coral lip, so I wanted to of course include that element and I personally love a great coral lip! And since she has big hair, I would curl my hair with some soft curls and sweep all of my hair to one side.
How will you recreate the Queen of Song’s look?

Today I wanted to shine light on the fact that it’s Black History Month but I wanted to shake it up by including fashion as well!
Toni Morrison is the first black woman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature and she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Next to her great accomplishments is her great sense of style. I am one who really appreciates and respects a person’s sense of style. I love that she keeps it conservative and professional and stays true to her PERSONAL style. I wanted to recreate her look in the photo but with my own personal twist.
I included a big chunky pearl necklace because that would be more my style. I love dramatic pieces (I guess that says something about my personality, you think?). I added a simple black cardigan and the Smashbox Burgundy Red lip.
Stay tuned for more amazing women to be celebrated for the rest of this month!

It’s been almost a year since I chopped off my hair and shaved the sides to end up with a super rad mohawk(see below for pics). I never took into consideration that day that I would want to grow my hair back. Continue reading →
